Students are involved in creating and producing something of their own, with peer and teacher support and not only receive valuable feedback from their teacher, but are involved in reflecting on their work and engage in self-evaluation as well.

there has been lots of definitions for the field which reflected the most prominent technologies that prevailed at each time. In General, the field tries to benefit from the technological developments and the use them to the best practices in the field of teaching. Instructional design has become a comprehensive and independent area of research by itself. The process of design is a systematic one with fixed steps to be followed and all the steps add to the whole integrative process.

The definition I like most is that of The Association for Educational Communications and technology (AECT), 2006 which says that:

Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.

Any Process of design should include all the following domains; Design, development, Utilization, Management and Evaluation.
